More than eight months after BP’s devastating oil rig explosion, The New York Times’ exhaustive investigation into the disaster’s causes has concluded that every single defense on the oil platform failed to protect the company's workers. For nine minutes after the initial blast, drillers failed to notify the rest of the crew. Even so, BP’s workers were not trained to deal with such a massive breakdown under their watch—they were only knowledgeable about how respond to the normal scope of problems that arise in drilling. Transocean, which owned Deepwater Horizon, said crew members “acted appropriately based on the information they had.”
