BP: 'Static Kill' Worked

Gulf Disaster

Says mud is holding down the oil.

Wipe your brow: A BP spokeswoman said that the “desired outcome” has been reached in the company’s “static kill” operation. On Tuesday, BP began pumping heavy mud down a relief well into the leaking Deepwater Horizon well and, so far, the mud is holding. Meanwhile, the government will announce on Wednesday that three-quarters of the spilled oil has evaporated, dispersed, been captured, or has been otherwise eliminated, and that the remaining oil poses little harm. “There’s absolutely no evidence that there’s any significant concentration of oil that’s out there that we haven’t accounted for,” said Jane Lubchenco, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, ruling out the possibility that an underwater mass of oil could still come onshore.
