Brazil's Ruling Party Treasurer Resigns

CORRUPTION

Hours after his arrest.

Joao Vaccari, the treasurer of Brazil's ruling Workers' Party, resigned Thursday after his arrest in connection to a bribery scandal at the state oil firm Petrobras. Vaccari has been accused of playing a role in a scheme where the party funneled money through deals with oil executives and construction firms. Anti-corruption protests decrying the scandal have roiled much of Brazil, calling for President Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment over her alleged role. Rousseff, who maintains her innocence, helmed Petrobras when the corruption took place. The Workers' Party said it continues to support Vaccari and remains sure of his innocence.
