Margaret Thatcher was one of Britain’s most divisive political leaders of the past century—and she may be just what the country needs now. That’s according to King’s College history professor Richard Vinen, who writes in The New York Times that her political style is uniquely tailored to the U.K.’s current challenges. With the country facing economic catastrophe, leaders will need to make dramatic, deeply unpopular decisions. That would be no problem for the Iron Lady: “She was at her best when odds seemed against her or when she had clear enemies.”
