Basketball powerhouse Brittney Griner proposed to her girlfriend, fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson, this week, documenting the engagement in an exuberant Instagram post. Johnson, who plays for the Tulsa Shock, later shared her own intimate picture of the ring with the caption "What I get to wake up to @brittneygriner #LoveMakesYouDoTheCraziestThings.” Griner, an openly lesbian athlete, was the center of a firestorm in 2012 when the 6-foot-8-inch NCAA champion stepped down from the U.S. Women's Olympics team amid vicious speculation that she wanted to avoid the IOC's controversial gender verification testing. At the time, Griner's coach and teammates rallied around the player and she went on to be drafted by the Phoenix Mercury for its 2013 season as the top overall pick.
