Broward County sheriff’s deputies will soon start carrying AR-15 rifles at the county’s schools, Sheriff Scott Israel announced Wednesday. The decision—which has the backing of the superintendent of schools—comes one week after a student opened fire on students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people. Israel said the weapons will remain locked inside patrol cars when they’re not being used. Officials said an armed police officer was present at the school during the massacre. During a listening session at the White House earlier Wednesday, President Donald Trump endorsed the idea of arming teachers as a way to stop mass shootings.
