Building Collapse in New Delhi Kills 65

Rescuers hammered through mountains of concrete Tuesday looking for survivors of a 5-story apartment building crash in the poor Lalita Park neighborhood of New Dehli. Police said at least 65 were killed and many more were injured. "The scale of the tragedy is unprecedented," said Sheila Dikshit, the top Dehli official, as she toured the devastation. One official said the the building could have been weakened by moonsoon rains; residents said the owner was illegally constructing an additional floor on top of the building. Police filed charges against the owner and began a search, as he fled immediately after the collapse.
