Burma Leader Hails ‘New Era’

Burma opposition leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi didn’t waste any time setting her agenda after her victory in Sunday’s election. Suu Kyi, who spent 22 years under house arrest, called the election “the beginning of a new era” and said her first goal would be new constitutional reforms. She said she wants to repeal the law that the military must fill a quarter of all parliamentary seats. She also promised an investigation into irregularities in Sunday’s vote. Such moves will likely meet with resistance from the military and its government supporters.
