CA Ends Firefighter Plan for Violent Ex-Cons

California has abandoned a plan to allow prisoners arrested for violent crimes to become firefighters after widespread outcry. “We need to rethink that,” a California Department of Corrections spokesman said. The agency will continue to reassess which crimes qualify for the program, but will allow prisoners with seven years left on their sentence, rather than just five, to participate.
