A California woman will soon be freed from prison, 18 years after being sentenced to life without parole after killing her pimp, after Gov. Jerry Brown on Friday allowed a parole board’s decision to go through. Sara Kruzan was 16 when she killed the man who had sexually abused her and groomed her since age 11 to work as a child prostitute. At age 17, she was sentenced to life without parole, and now 35, she has become a high-profile example of juveniles who are given harsh sentences. In September, Brown signed a bill that would give special consideration to juveniles who have served 15 years of lengthy of sentences—a move advocates said would already make 1,000 prisoners eligible for parole.
