California voters checked death on their ballots. The state voted to reject Prop 34, which would have repealed the death penalty. Inmates with current death sentences would have had them retroactively replaced with a sentence of life without parole. Only 47.3 percent of voters were in favor of the initiative, even though supporters estimated that the state would save at least $130 million by ceasing capital punishment. “We thank the voters of California for rejecting Prop 34 and standing up for those who no longer have a voice,” the group No on Prop 34 said in a statement.
