An outbreak of the bacterial disease shingella has spread to two Bay Area counties after first originating at a San Jose seafood restaurant last week. Officials in both San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties confirmed that they are investigating multiple cases of shingella linked to the initial outbreak. More than 100 patients have reported symptoms associated with the bacterial disease, according to county officials. Shingella is most commonly spread by food or water that has been handled by contaminated hands; and it's symptoms include severe diarrhea, fever and abdominal pain.
