California has more than 50 new earthquake faults, the Los Angeles Times reports, and they're now viewable on a new state map—the first such map to be released in 16 years. The new faults on the map include insignificant ones, as well as faults responsible for major quakes such as the 7.1 Hector Mine quake that rattled Southern California in 1999. Most of the faults have been known to researchers, but officials hope that putting them on one map will help educate the public about the state's geography as well as inform emergency plans and building plans. It's probably not a great idea to build a hospital on a fault line, for example.
