Today in Slate, Jesse Bering considers a decidedly Slate-y question: can a religious believer and an atheist have a happy marriage? In the absence of real data, Bering is left to ponder hypotheticals. On the one hand, atheists like himself would do well to seek out a spouse who believes adultery will condemn her to hell. On the other hand, the differing world views could cause serious marital tension and maybe even lead them to seek likeminded partners outside the union. “The perfect imaginary atheist bride might be waiting for me with bated breath,” he worries.
