With populist anger rising to a high-water mark, Senate Democrats may not have enough votes to reconfirm Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. Three Republican senators have put holds on the Bush appointee, who has been criticized for not doing enough to stimulate job growth, and the progressive wing of Senate Democrats are pushing to replace Bernanke with someone who would focus on “‘Main Street’ issues like unemployment,” according to senators who spoke with Roll Call. At one point, a vote on Bernanke was scheduled for Friday, but it was pushed back amid a debate over raising the debt limit.
