Former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor told the Richmond Times Dispatch early Friday morning that he will resign from Congress earlier than expected, on Aug. 18. The humbled congressman says he has asked Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe to call for a special election that coincides with the Nov. 4 general election. “I want to make sure that the constituents in the 7th District will have a voice in what will be a very consequential lame-duck session,” Cantor said. The political world was shocked when Cantor, a powerful member of the leadership in Congress who had rarely faced a real challenger, was upended by economics professor Dave Brat.
