Following in the footsteps of Bill Clinton, former President Jimmy Carter successfully negotiated the release of an American jailed in North Korea, touching down in Boston today with the freed man. Though Carter embarked on this mission as a private citizen, the State Department welcomed his success, saying in a statement that they "appreciate former President Carter's humanitarian effort and welcome the DPRK's decision to grant Mr. Gomes special amnesty and allow him to return to the United States." Carter apparently apologized to Kim Yong Nam, president of the country's assembly, and promised that an incident would not happen again. The man, Aijalon Mahli Gomes, had illegally crossed North Korea's border.
