‘Catching Fire’ Wins Box Office

There’s a reason nobody was at the stores this weekend—they were all at the movies. Catching Fire and Frozen broke post-Thanksgiving weekend records, with Frozen bringing in $66.7 million over three days for the highest opening on the holiday weekend ever. In its second week, Catching Fire won the box office, grossing $74.5 million domestically over three days, and $110.2 million over five days—and $573 million worldwide. Disney’s Frozen helped the studio reach another record: $4 billion in profits, its most in history. Thor: The Dark World came in third with $15.5 million, followed by The Best Man Holiday with $11.1 million, and Homefront netting $9.8 million. It was not a good weekend for Spike Lee, though: His latest, Oldboy, grossed just $1.3 million on 583 theaters, meaning it had a $1,458 per-screen average.
