When Lady Gaga took surfing lessons in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, last week, there was just no way to avoid the paparazzi. According to a source who spoke to The Sun, “For a relative beginner, she took to surfing really well.” And this being Lady Gaga, her outfit was reasonably outrageous—she started riding waves in a wetsuit and peeled it off to reveal a tiny black bikini. But Little Monsters who were hoping for a glimpse of some trademark crab shoes on the beach had to settle for Gaga’s water socks. “yeah that’s me,” she tweeted along with a photo of herself in action. “no heels baby.”

In 2009, Lindsay Lohan and her sister Ali took surfing lessons while on vacation in Hawaii. And last week in Malibu, she was back on a board in a Cynthia Rowley wetsuit and full makeup. (The glam look was all for a Love Cat magazine photo shoot.) After she finished riding waves, Lohan, who recently completed her house arrest, lit up a cigarette on the beach—which is against the law.

While vacationing with her family in Hawaii last week, a bikini-clad Reese Witherspoon showed off a new tattoo on her stomach. But when it came time to take surfing lessons with her kids—11-year-old daughter Ava and 7-year-old son Deacon—the 35-year-old Oscar winner covered up with a rash guard and a baseball cap. Witherspoon’s new husband, Jim Toth, sat on the beach as the three learned to ride, and Reese was all smiles—even when she fell.

While Victoria Beckham spent most of the summer pregnant—she gave birth to her first daughter, Harper Seven, in July—David Beckham was taking their three sons surfing and bodyboarding near their home in Malibu. Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz even got to catch some waves with Becks’s good friend, chef Gordon Ramsay—tasty waves, no doubt.

Having portrayed the mother of shark-attack victim Bethany Hamilton in Soul Surfer earlier this year, Helen Hunt took up the sport for real. “'I'm comfortable on my board,” the 49-year-old Oscar-winning actress said of her skills. “If the waves get too big, I become uncomfortable very quickly.” Much as her boyfriend did when he thought he spotted a shark one day when they were surfing. As Hunt confessed to Jay Leno: "I look at him and he's looking out, and then I see he very quietly puts his feet up on the board." When she asked why, he admitted, "Well, I thought maybe I saw a little fin.” A dismayed Hunt quipped: "Were you gonna tell your friend? Was a memo gonna go out?”

When Gerard Butler lost a ton of weight this summer, got ripped, dyed his hair blond, and took up surfing, many wondered if the 41-year-old Scottish actor was having a midlife crisis. It turned out Butler was just preparing for an upcoming role in Mavericks, where he will play Rick “Frosty” Hesson, who mentored big-wave surfing legend Jay Moriarity, who died tragically at 22.

Earlier this year, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard took their 5-year-old daughter, Ramona, on a family vacation to Kauai, Hawaii, where Mom and Dad took some surfing lessons. And last month Gyllenhaal returned to Hawaii with her brother, Jake, for their father’s wedding to Kathleen Man in Oahu. The Gyllenhaals even found a little time to hit the waves before the ceremony.

Having postponed his honeymoon with LeAnn Rimes due to their work schedules, Eddie Cibrian finally took some time off this summer with his new bride at the Esperanza Resort in Cabo San Lucas. The star of NBC’s upcoming show The Playboy Club spent one day surfing, while Rimes relaxed on a yacht and fought off seasickness with Dramamine. “It's a medication to keep me from getting sick on the boat this morning,” she tweeted. “Worked, but I'm passed out now.” How romantic.

"My church is surfing and yoga,” actress Minnie Driver admitted in an interview a few years ago. “Surfing is an utter, necessary part of my life, though I'm less obsessive than I used to be. I used to be up at 4:30 a.m. in my car, driving, trying to see where there was a break and what was going on." Surfers even came to her rescue in 2008, when she was pregnant and relaxing on a beach in Malibu and some paparazzi showed up. The locals chased away the photographers. And earlier this summer, at a charity event in L.A., the 41-year-old Driver started teaching her 2-year-old son, Henry, a few real moves on a pretend wave.
