Jim Carrey has worn a green mask, an orange tuxedo, and a furry Seuss suit. But those get-ups were all for the movies. This week, the 49-year-old comedian decided to cut his hair into a rebellious mohawk and shared an artistic picture with his Twitter followers. According to his rep, the ‘do is not for a role so one can only assume this punk look is of his own accord. He may now be the most famous grandpa with a mohawk.

Maddox and his hair have been plastered all over tabloids ever since he debuted his signature hairstyle at barely 2 years old. “He can do his hair in a Mohawk if I put gel in his hand,” gushed new mom Angelina Jolie in 2003, a year after she adopted him from Cambodia. Now 10, the eldest of Jolie and Brad Pitt’s brood still sports the punk rock look, which he has made trendy for kids everywhere. As The New York Times put it, “Maddox has done for mohawks what Harry Potter did for round spectacles.”

As heartthrob Jordan Catalano on My So-Called Life, Jared Leto had shaggy curtain hair, parted down the middle, framing his piercing blue eyes. But by the time the 21st century arrived, Leto had turned away from the teen drama and toward his rock band 30 Seconds to Mars. Ever since, he’s been bald, blue, and blond, but Leto recently grew his hair out and cemented his rock star status. In April 2010, Leto tweeted a picture of himself with a quote from Fight Club: “You’re too fuckin blonde!” It must have really been bothering him, because the next day he took to Twitter to reveal his new look—a bright pink mohawk.

It wasn’t a complete surprise when Rihanna stepped out with a mohawk in 2009, considering this Barbadian beauty has become quite the fashion risk taker. “After we put out Good Girl Gone Bad,” Rihanna told Interview of her third studio album, “it kind of became a darker, edgier look, and then it got even edgier on the last album [ Rated R]… I don't like stuff that's too contrived.” The 23-year-old songstress has gone through quite the hairvolution since—and though she’s since ditched the mohawk and gone from brown to blond to Ronald McDonald red, her rebellious style remains.

The former drummer for Blink-182 has long been known for a multitude of tattoos and his potentially dangerous mohawk. And apparently, one mohawk-sporting Barker was not enough—the rocker’s young son also boasts an impressive one. But, not everyone is a fan of the rock star hairstyle. “My wife will take our son to swimming class and he'll show up with a mohawk, and no one will talk to my wife or my son because he has a weird haircut,” Barker told MTV.

This British footballer changes his hairstyle as often as he changes soccer jerseys, but his mohawks are among the most memorable. In 2009, Beckham’s son Cruz attended one of his games sporting a mohawk just like his dad’s. The style even rubbed off on his A-list wife Victoria (a.k.a. Posh Spice), who went for the cropped, prickly look briefly as well in 2008.

Demi Moore’s Twitter followers got punk’d when her younger “hubby” Ashton Kutcher tweeted a photoshopped image of his “wifey” with a mohawk in July 2009, saying he “loved ” her new haircut. Moore tweeted back, “I have the buzzer ready baby!” In reality, the look wasn’t much of a stretch for the one-time bald beauty, who shaved her hair off for the 1997 action flick G.I. Jane.

The debatably talented Sanjaya Malakar turned heads when he kept returning week after week on the sixth American Idol– but his gravity-defying ponyhawk on the March 27, 2007, episode really caused a commotion. What did the judges think? Simon Cowell, of course, was not a fan of the ‘do. “I presume there was no mirror in your dressing room tonight,” he said. “I don’t think it matters any more what we say. I genuinely don’t. You’re in your own universe and if people like you, then good luck.”

When Adam Sandler was first spotted wearing a mohawk in 2007, rumors flew that he had an upcoming movie project that required the unusual look. But it turns out, like Carrey, it was just something Sandler wanted to try out. While promoting You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, he told MTV that he showed up for another film with the mohawk and the director told him he had keep his mohawk for the whole movie. The comedian agreed, but later admitted it was the worst haircut he’s ever had.

Quirky pop star Ke$ha told Us Weekly that even when she dresses up, she’s never “a pretty girl. I think it’s more interesting to have a little of your [own] style in anything.” At Us Weekly’s Hot Hollywood: Stars Who Care party, the “Tik Tok” singer showed off her individuality by rocking a mohawk. She laughed about the look, telling the magazine, “I’m definitely not the hottest girl in the world by far, but you have to work with what you got!” Apparently, what she’s got is a lot of hair and some super-hold styling gel.

As a bespectacled, spiky-haired 6 year old in Jerry Maguire, Jonathan Lipnicki charmed the world when he asked, “Do you know the human head weighs eight pounds?” As a teenager, though, he ditched the glasses and rebelled against his legacy of adorableness by sporting a mohawk at 17. Now 20, Lipnicki has a more conventional buzz cut. But despite the lack of hair height, his head probably still weighs eight pounds.

Long before the mohawk took off, The A-Team’s Mr. T pioneered the look pop culturally in 1977 after reading National Geographic magazine. Although Mr. T doesn’t “wanna be disrespectful to the Mohican Indians,” he calls his signature ‘do the “Mandinka cut” after the Mandinka warriors who sported it. The actor eventually took his love of the hairstyle to a new level by appearing in a commercial for the World of Warcraft and declaring, “I am Mr. T and I’m a Night Elf Mohawk.” He even filmed a follow-up spot, promoting the “mohawk grenade,” which gives pitiful and foolish players his look.
