A Delta regional jet narrowly avoided a potential collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport after a business jet took off while the CRJ-900 was approaching to land, prompting an emergency go-around. The Oct. 7 incident occurred shortly before 4 p.m., with ABC7 New York reporting that the aircraft came within approximately 1,000 feet of each other, according to flight-tracking data. Delta confirmed its crew abandoned the landing to maintain safe separation, and the flight from Omaha later touched down without incident. No injuries were reported. Air traffic control audio appears to capture a dispute over whether the business jet had permission to depart. “I believe you were never cleared for takeoff, sir, I believe you were cleared to line up and wait,” a controller can be heard saying, while the pilot reportedly disagreed. The FAA is investigating the incident to establish what clearance was given and whether communication failures contributed to the near-miss.
Astronomers found the universe’s first star that glows “ghostly green,” according to a new study. Most stars come in shades determined by their temperature—usually blue, white, and orange. White dwarves—the dense cores left behind when larger, Sun-like stars die—were widely assumed to follow the same rule. But new research from the University of Warwick suggests some may actually shine in hues of green, pink, cyan, yellow, and purple. “It turns out these incredibly dense stars can produce colors nobody expected, and some of them genuinely surprised me,” study co-author Mark Hollands said in a statement. The stars’ ultra-dense atmospheres and trace elements can interact to create a wider range of colors visible to humans. Because white dwarfs are too far from Earth to see with the naked eye, scientists calculated their color from their spectra, or “fingerprints” of light split by wavelength. Researchers ran the spectra through a human-vision model to predict how they would look up close.

Kaley Cuoco Welcomes Second Child With Emmy Winner
“The Big Bang Theory” actress revealed she had given her child an unusual name.
Kaley Cuoco and her fiancé, Tom Pelphrey, have welcomed their second child. The actress revealed they welcomed another daughter, who will be a little sister to their three-year-old, Matilda. The couple announced the arrival of Philomena Carmine Bobby Pelphrey in an Instagram post on Wednesday. Cuoco, 40, revealed “Philo” was born on October 12. “There are no words to describe this feeling once again…. We are so grateful for the crazy wild up and down journey that brought us to our little Philo. Family officially complete.” Cuoco wrote. She also included her fiancé in the celebratory post, saying, “Life exploded the minute we met, and the gifts keep coming. I love you forever, girl daddy!” Pelphrey, 44, also posted welcoming the couple’s “youngest queen” and thanking his wife, saying, “Kaley you showed up in every way as a partner and a mom even when you weren’t feeling your best… The girls and I would be lost without you.” Cuoco was married to Ryan Sweeting from 2013 to 2016 and then to Karl Cook from 2018 to 2022. She met Pelphrey in April 2022 after their mutual talent manager set them up. They welcomed Matilda in 2023 and got engaged in 2024. Pelphrey called his family “the crown jewel” of his life in his acceptance speech for his 2026 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Task, starring Mark Ruffalo.
Mike Tyson is embroiled in a $1.5 million court battle after he allegedly refused to teach a giant talking pigeon to box. Promoters for the online gambling brand Rabona are suing the heavyweight champion, claiming Tyson breached a 2024 sponsorship contract by pulling out of an advertising campaign. The canceled video would have shown Tyson, who raised pet pigeons as a child in New York, speaking with a presenter in a bird costume, teaching them some moves, and then playing casino games on Rabona’s website. But, according to the 60-year-old fighter’s wife, Lakiha Tyson, he pulled out because the “ridiculous” pigeon video would have made him “the butt of the joke.” Meanwhile, lawyers for Rabona’s promoter say the real dispute has nothing to do with pigeons; instead, they claim Tyson “simply lost interest” in the deal after a more lucrative exhibition match with YouTuber Jake Paul came along.

Tech Firm Hired by Rubio Landed Deals for 10 Years Despite Alleged Russia Ties
The group behind Oxygen Forensics allegedly makes much of its software in Russia and has sold its systems to the Kremlin.

A scandal-hit spy tech firm hired by Marco Rubio has been landing government contracts for 10 years since concerns were first raised about its alleged ties to the Kremlin. The Justice Department charged Oxygen Forensics CEO Lee Reiber, 55, last month with allegedly trying to hide how the Virginia-based group was owned and controlled by Russian nationals. Prosecutors claim that Oxygen, which has long supplied phone-hacking tech to U.S. defense, law enforcement, and national security agencies, developed much of its software in Russia and sold versions of those systems to Vladimir Putin’s spies. But government records reviewed by PunchUp, the Daily Beast’s sister Substack, now show that federal investigators raised the alarm about Oxygen more than a decade before the DOJ finally brought charges against Reiber. We reported last week that under Rubio, the State Department even awarded Oxygen a new $50,000 contract this summer, at least six months after renewed concerns about the firm’s ownership began circulating among federal officials, and just weeks before Reiber was arrested. The company has secured at least $2 million in government contracts since concerns first surfaced in 2016, according to public procurement documents. Those deals were struck under both the Biden and Trump administrations.
Tom Latchem exposes the secrets, scandals, and stories that powerful people and institutions want to keep under wraps. Follow all of his reporting at PunchUp on Substack.

SOUR NOTE
Country Star Shades ‘The Voice’ Judge for Stealing Her Thunder
She also unfollowed her “You Look Like You Love Me” duet partner on social media.
Ella Langley called out her “You Look Like You Love Me” singing partner, Riley Green, for appearing to take credit for her success. Green, 37, is a first-time coach on The Voice, where he tried to convince country duo Ferryn and Brinkley Wright to choose him by saying they reminded him of someone. “I took her on tour with me. Her name’s Ella Langley. She’s doing pretty well,” Green said on the NBC show. Green’s pitch convinced the duo to pick him as their coach. A fan asked Langley if the comment “rubbed her the wrong way” while the country star was live on Instagram on October 8. “Yeah, when that man took credit? No, didn’t love that, but typical… Pretty typical,” Langley replied. Although Green hasn’t publicly responded, Langley has unfollowed him on social media. The country singers have two hit duets, including 2024’s “Don’t Mind If I Do,” and they toured together in 2024 and 2025. “You Look Like You Love Me” won the CMA Awards for musical event, single, song, and music video of the year. Langley’s hit “Choosin’ Texas” broke the record for the longest-running No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100, previously held by Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
RuPaul’s Drag Race star Lucian Piane had been arrested for assault hours before he was fatally struck by a car. The songwriter and producer was arrested Sunday by Glendale Police for reportedly throwing a water bottle at a hotel manager at an Embassy Suites. The 46-year-old allegedly accused the manager of running a prostitution ring, and then flung a water bottle at him. Officers arrested Piane for assault around 6:45 p.m. Lucian told police he was a writer who lived in Hollywood and insisted he didn’t take drugs, a source told TMZ. One source said that while Piane cooperated in the arrest, he was rambling and appeared manic. The guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race was taken into police custody at 7:42 p.m., issued a citation, and released at 11:49 p.m. He died just five hours later, after being hit by a vehicle while walking in Glendale. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said he died from blunt trauma. Piane had another run-in with the law on Saturday, when he was cited for allegedly being under the influence of a controlled substance. He was supposed to appear in court on Monday. Piane had been open about substance abuse in the past and in August said he had been sober for more than a year. His former collaborator, Marc Shaiman, said Piane had died “after a decade of a tragic descent into schizophrenia.”

Homeowner Makes Priceless 3,000-Year-Old Discovery in Garden
Archaeologists have confirmed that a man’s mysterious find while moving earth outside his home is part of an ancient 28-foot statue. The man was digging outside his home in the village of Behebat al-Hijara in the Gharbia Governorate of Egypt when he unwittingly stumbled across a Piece of King Ramses II’s likeness. Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said the discovery led to the unearthing of two statues and a pink granite stone covered in inscriptions. Inspectors attended the scene and said the piece the man found was archaeologically significant, sparking an excavation by the Supreme Council of Antiquities. One of the two statues is of Ramses II, who ruled Egypt more than 3,000 years ago, the ministry said. Archaeologists believe the second may also depict him. The first statue includes a head of Ramses that is 5 feet 3 inches tall and wears a double crown, according to the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Hisham El-Lithi. Based on the head’s size, experts think the full statue would have been 28 feet tall.
A passenger plane came scarily close to a van while landing. The Airbus A320, operated by Jetstar, was en route to regional Townsville Airport in Queensland, Australia, after taking off from Brisbane about an hour and a half earlier. Flight JQ908 is reported to have passed over the white van by less than 50 feet after the ground vehicle entered a restricted area during the plane’s landing. Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) labeled the close call last week a “serious incident.” “Safety is our number one priority, and we are working with the ATSB to understand the circumstances surrounding this incident,” a Jetstar spokesperson told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in a statement. “Defence is working closely with the ATSB regarding its investigation into a runway incursion and near-collision at RAAF Base Townsville/Townsville Airport on 7 October 2026, after a vehicle entered a restricted airside area,” a spokesperson for the Australian Defence Force told the same network.
Archaeologists have discovered the world’s oldest shipwreck off Turkey’s coast, the BBC reports. The wreck dates back to the Early Bronze Age, around 4,400 to 4,700 years ago. Although the vessel’s wooden structure did not survive, archaeologists recovered large stone anchors and ceramic storage pots, called amphorae, which they used to date the ruin. They believe the ship was carrying goods to either Crete or the ancient city of Troy when it capsized near Turkey’s Kekova Island. “The shipwreck is a time capsule at the bottom of the sea,” expedition leader Hakan Öniz told the BBC. “We are the first humans who [have] touched these objects after 5,000 years.” A 4,200-year-old wreck off the coast of Dokos, an island in southern Greece, previously held the record for the world’s oldest shipwreck.
