A Chicago cop who fatally shot an unarmed woman in 2012 has resigned from the force just as the city’s police oversight board was due to decide his fate. The 2012 shooting by Dante Servin, who was off-duty at the time of the incident, triggered widespread protests and shook relations with the city’s police force. Servin had shot a young black woman who was walking with friends on the street. Although he claimed a member of the group had turned toward him with a gun, no weapon was ever recovered at the scene. Prosecutors initially charged Servin but a judge acquitted him last year. City authorities settled a $4.5 million wrongful-death suit with the family of the victim, 22-year-old Rekia Boyd, in 2013.
