On Saturday, a joint airstrike by Afghan and American forces left a senior Taliban leader dead—but also took the lives of 17 others, including at least 10 children and injuring five women. The attack targeted high-profile commander Ali Khan and four Taliban insurgents, according to the district governor. Airstrikes have become increasingly controversial, and Afghan President Hamid Karzai barred his forces from requesting them after a February attack that left 10 civilians dead.
