Greenpeace activists are in serious trouble in Chile for damaging the UN World Heritage site of Nazca lines as part of their protest. The activists left footprints in the desert when they put big yellow cloth letters near the etching of the famed hummingbird, reading: “Time for Change; The Future Is Renewable.” The Nazca lines are roughly 1,500 to 2,000 years old and are huge drawings scratched into the ground and are considered a sacred site. The Chilean government is trying to keep the activists from leaving the country, and wants to pursue charges of “attacking archaeological monuments,” which carries a sentence of as much as six years in prison.
