New Yorkers should get ready to cheer for a new favorite in this year’s marathon. Edison Peña, one of the 33 Chileans trapped underground for 69 days, will run in the New York City marathon on November 7. He's been practicing: Peña ran three to six miles every day while trapped underground. The New York Road Runners, a running organization, extended an invitation to Peña on October 14, the day after the rescue operation ended. New York Road Runners President Mary Wittenberg said that Peña “demonstrated how running can play an important role in our physical and emotional well-being under any circumstance.” Peña will join 430,000 other runners from around the world when he runs the 26-mile race.
