Air pollution kills more than 4,400 people a day in China, a new study by Berkeley Earth claims, with a yearly total of more than 1.6 million deaths. Using World Health Organization estimates, the authors estimate that pollution is responsible for as much as 17 percent of annual deaths in China. The paper also claims that three in eight Chinese would be considered “unhealthy” by American standards. The report also found that Beijing’s smog is created in large part by an industrial zone outside the city, potentially further complicating efforts to clean the air ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
