A Chinese journalist and democracy activist has been released from Chinese custody after eight years of imprisonment, his associates reported on Saturday. Shi Tao was sentenced to prison in 2005 after Yahoo provided information on his e-mail account to government officials in Beijing. He had used the account to post on New York-based message boards about Chinese propaganda blocking coverage of the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. He was charged with leaking "state secrets." Shi was released on August 23 and has been staying with his mother. It is unclear why he was released before his sentence ended.
