Maybe harsh working conditions weren't to blame for the rash of suicides at a Chinese factory, where 10 workers have committed suicide this year alone. The company, which manufactures iPhones among other electronics, has decided to stop making condolence payments to the families of victims beyond its legal obligation. The company that owns the factory, Foxconn, had been paying out the equivalent of 10 years' salary as compensation—around $14,000. But since finding out that one worker had promised his family a large amount of money if he killed himself, Foxconn officials revoked its policy.
