Mexican immigrants no longer make up the largest share of people coming to America. According to research at the Population Association of America, that honor now goes to Chinese immigrants, who in 2013 numbered 147,000, compared with 125,000 from Mexico. Some 129,000 immigrants hailed from India, and other Asian countries also made it to the top of the list—signalling a potential change in future American racial demographics. The rapid immigration shift is a stark reversal from 2012, when Mexican immigrants outnumbered their Chinese counterparts by five to one.
