The U.S. filed a formal protest against Beijing this week after a Chinese warplane flew close to a U.S. Navy patrol jet and performed acrobatic maneuvers around it in international air space. Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said on Friday that the encounter took place on Tuesday 135 miles east of Hainan Island, where the Chinese jet came as close as 20 to 30 feet to the Navy jet and did a barrel roll over it.
