Chris Burkard Captures Surfing at the Ends of the Earth (Photos)

Photographer Chris Burkard travels the far reaches of the world to capture photos of the surfers who chase the biggest breaks—no matter what the weather is like.

Chris Burkard has traveled the far reaches of the planet to capture surfers in action. In his recent book, Distant Shores: Surfing the Ends of the Earth, Burkard traveled from Alaska to Russia and New Zealand to India, taking photos of the surf and sand (and sometimes even ice) that unifies a culture that prides itself on carving waves, catching air, and chasing the biggest breaks—no matter what the weather is like. An exhibition of Burkard’s most recent work will be on display in conjunction with the competition at the Shorebreak Hotel in Huntington Beach from August 1-3.
