Facebook billionaire and owner of The New Republic Chris Hughes did not use his own publication to defend his choices on the venerable magazine's future and recent news of a mass staff exodus, but instead responded through a Washington Post op-ed Sunday. The entrepreneur insisted "the vast majority of our staff remain," and did not address top editor Franklin Foer or literary editor Leon Wieseltier's departure, which prompted more than two dozen editors and contributing editors to resign. “I didn’t buy the New Republic to be the conservator of a small print magazine," Hughes wrote, contending he aims to build "a strong and sustainable institution."
