Sanger is chief Washington correspondent for the New York Times—an indefatigable reporter and a crack writer. His book is largely a depressing but illuminating catalogue of lost or squandered opportunities of the last eight years. My favorite part so far: the “Laptop of Death,” about a laptop that the CIA gave to an Iranian nuclear scientist on which to download their bomb-making plans. Tragically, the laptop made it out of the country—its owner didn’t.
