The Cleveland Indians on Wednesday set a new American League record for consecutive wins a season, breaking the previous AL record of 20 games set by the 2002 Oakland Athletics. Jay Bruce’s 2-run homer in the first inning gave the Indians enough support to defeat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 and win their 21st consecutive game—tying the 1935 Chicago Cubs for the second-best streak in Major League Baseball history. The New York Giants (now San Francisco) hold the MLB overall record for longest winning streak with their historic 26-game run in 1916.
