Climate Bill on the Brink

On the Hill

House vote comes down to the wire.

Will a fragile coalition hold together? “The House churned toward a showdown vote Friday on historic legislation to reduce pollution linked to global warming and power the nation with cleaner but more expensive energy,” the Associated Press reports. Republicans are solidly against the measure, which they say would kill jobs and raise energy prices. But Democrats argue it will create millions of “green jobs.” Democrats narrowly won a vote, 217-205, to move the bill to the House floor today, with 30 Democrats defecting. President Obama has been making phone calls to shore up support. Nancy Pelosi promised to pass the legislation before Congress’s July 4 recess.
