Clinton Urged FL Dem to Drop Out

Bill Clinton’s spokesman confirmed to Politico Thursday that the former president nearly succeeded in pushing Democrat Kendrick Meek out of his Senate race in Florida. Meek is trailing badly in the polls—The Daily Beast’s Election Oracle gives him just a 10 percent chance of winning—and Clinton almost convinced him to drop out and endorse Charlie Crist, the independent candidate, in order to swing liberal votes away from ultra-conservative Marco Rubio. Meek acquiesced—twice—before ultimately deciding against it. “The argument was: You can be a hero here,” said someone who was in on the conversations.
