GQ magazine has named former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who got President Donald Trump's attention by kneeling in protest of police brutality during the national anthem at NFL games, its “Citizen of the Year.” Kaepernick declined to speak to the magazine, instead curatings a series of interviews with people he admires, including filmmaker Ava Duvernay and rapper J. Cole. Joining Kaepernick on a series of GQ covers are Stephen Colbert (“Bad Hombre of the Year”), Gal Gadot (“Wonder Woman of the Year”) and Kevin Durant (“Champion of the Year”). Still a free agent, Kaepernick remains without a team following the controversy prompted by his peaceful protest.
