After years of negotiations, Colombia’s congress approved a peace accord with the FARC rebel group Wednesday night, two months after voters turned down the terms of a previous agreement in a nationwide referendum. This time, the Senate and House of Representatives bypassed voters and approved the deal directly. President Juan Manuel Santos tweeted his excitement Wednesday, expressing “gratitude to Congress for approving the new accords.” Colombia’s 52-year war with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia has resulted in an estimated 200,000 deaths.
