Senator Maria Cantwell, chairwoman of the Indian Affairs Committee, said Sunday lawmakers would "definitely" examine the National Football League's tax-exempt status as one way to pressure the Washington Redskins to change its name. Cantwell and Rep. Tom Cole (a Democrat and Republican, respectively) wrote a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell, urging him to support changing the Redskins' name. "The NFL can no longer ignore this and perpetuate the use of this name as anything but what it is: a racial slur," they said. Last year, Sen. Tom Coburn introduced a bill to strip the NFL of its tax-exempt status.
