During a discussion at Harvard over the weekend, Gates confessed that the original IBM PC's designers came up with the shortcut as a way to quickly reboot when the software they were developing would freeze—which happened a lot. "It was like a five-minute job," said David Bradley, who designed the original IBM PC, at last year's 20th anniversary celebration for the IBM PC.
