The Baltimore police sergeant seen on video spitting on a handcuffed man last October was found guilty Friday of second-degree assault and misconduct in office. Sgt. Robert Messner—a 34-year veteran of the force—was sentenced to two years probation, a $500 fine, anger-management classes, community service, and reassignment, The Baltimore Sun reported. Messner was initially suspended after video of the Oct. 12 incident went viral and showed him arresting Alfred Evans, 31, and spitting on him, prompting outcry from bystanders. The arrestee was also handed four charges for the encounter, including second-degree assault of an officer and resisting arrest. He will face a jury trial this month.
