‘Corn Syrup’ Renamed ‘Corn Sugar’

Branding

Industry applies to FDA for new name.

This won’t stop it from making you fat: The Corn Refiners Association has asked the Food and Drug Administration to rename high-fructose corn syrup as “corn sugar” on food labels. The request comes after health and anti-obesity campaigns have driven the consumption of high-fructose corn syrup, which is used in sodas, breads, cereals, and other foods, to a 20-year low. Approval of the new name could take two years, but the industry has already started a campaign with www.cornsugar.com and television ads. According to one television spot, "Whether it's corn sugar or cane sugar, your body can't tell the difference. Sugar is sugar.”
