Cornell University’s first female president died Sunday night at the age of 52. Elizabeth Garrett was diagnosed with colon cancer just two weeks prior, school officials said. “It is with utmost sadness that I write to inform you that our president, colleague, and friend, Elizabeth Garrett, passed away late last evening after a brave battle with colon cancer,” wrote Robert Harrison, chairman of Cornell’s board of trustees. “There are few words to express the enormity of this loss.” Garrett was inaugurated in September.
