Perhaps afraid the dead would strike back, an Arkansas coroner used a Defense Department giveaway program to get a hold of a Humvee, assault rifle, handgun, and kayak. Doug Wortham acquired the goods through the recently-maligned 1033 program in which surplus military supplies are given to local law enforcement. When asked why he needed the hardware, Wortham replied, "I just wanted to protect myself."
