Arizona’s new immigration law isn’t the state’s only new crackdown: Schools in the area have recently been told by the Arizona Department of Education to remove teachers with “heavily accented or ungrammatical” speech from classes with students still in the process of learning English. The move is meant to help students pick up the language more quickly, but critics call the standards arbitrary and targeted toward immigrant teachers. “This is just one more indication of the incredible anti-immigrant sentiment in the state,” Bruce Merrill, a former professor at Arizona State University who now conducts public-opinion research, told The Wall Street Journal. Education officials deny the allegations, and the deputy school superintendent for the state slammed critics for "politicizing the educational environment."
