Carl Djerassi, the chemist known as the creator of “the pill,” died at his home in San Francisco on Friday at the age of 91. Djerassi, who came to America at the age of 16 as an Austrian Jewish refugee, synthesized the hormone that changed the world by creating the key ingredient in the oral contraceptive. He died of complications from liver and bone cancer.
