White House Denies WSJ Report on Chinese Eavesdropping Post

The report said Beijing will pay the cash-strapped island billions to build a spy facility.

The White House has disputed a bombshell report that China has agreed to pay Cuba billions to let it set up an eavesdropping post on the island. “We have seen the report. It’s not accurate,” John Kirby, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, said according to Bloomberg. The Wall Street Journal reported that the proposed spy base would give China access to emails, phone calls and satellite transmissions in the southeastern U.S. WSJ reported that thought of a spy station 100 miles from Florida had reportedly shaken the Biden administration. Craig Singleton, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies think tank, called it “a bit of a game changer” and said, “The selection of Cuba is also intentionally provocative.”
