Cyanide Gas Feared in Tianjin Recovery

Impending storms have raised concerns about cyanide gas amid recovery efforts in Tianjin, where explosions have left sodium cyanide exposed. The city’s head environmental engineer warned that the compound is water-soluble, and “if there is rain, it will produce hydrogen cyanide, so we are monitoring it closely.” Crews are working to collect the exposed compounds. Explosions and fires continue in the area, which now has a 1.8-mile evacuation zone. Displaced residents have begun holding protests demanding compensation.
