Joyce Mitchell discussed a murder-for-hire plot with the two men she allegedly helped spring from an upstate New York prison, a local prosecutor said Wednesday. At a news conference, Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie said Mitchell talked about the possibility of killing her husband with Richard Matt and David Sweat before they broke out of prison. Prosecutors say Mitchell—charged with smuggling the murderers tools and a cellphone—agreed to be their getaway driver but then got cold feet, in part because she still loved her husband (who also works at the prison). The local search for the escaped killers was redirected Tuesday, after bloodhounds picked up the men’s scents in a heavily wooded area.
