A 19-year-old top student at Moscow State University secretly converted to Islam and left Russia to join extremist groups. Varvara Karaulova’s goodbye to her parents was just a message from Istanbul, telling them that everything was OK. Russian news agencies report that the second-year student went to the university on May 27, but subsequently disappeared. Karaulova is fluent in English and French, according to friends and family, but also knows Arabic well. She is last known to have boarded an Aeroflot flight bound for Istanbul, from where her parents believe she went to Syria or Libya.
